… After a brief silence, he poured water into a bowl and said to them, “Look carefully at the water,” for it was disturbed. Then, after a little while, he said to them again, “Now look carefully [and see] how the water is stilled,” and as they looked at the water, they saw their faces as in a mirror. Then he said to them, “It is like that too for somebody amidst people; he cannot see his own sins for the tumult; but when he practices hesychia, especially in the desert, then he sees his own shortcomings.”
