Feast of Saint Laurence, Martyr, 2012

Today: at Holy Communion

On Death Row

We read the readings

From a Sunday ago

And in the second reading

Ephesians 4:17, 20-24

We find something

To talk about

To push past the

Simple recollections

Of golden regulations

Pausing: to consider the

Pressured effort in

Turning verily

The other cheek

Holding back

The tongue

Holding tight

In prayer the heart

In fighting hard

Never to swing

Nor to strike

So as: to find

Some release

And really truly try

To do what we each know

Down deep to be right

Forgive me, Abba… as I forgive those

Talking real: about

Thinking through

Radical love

Made clear

And conditional

In Christ’s Pater

Noster

And all this

In a place

Designed

To defeat

Community

To silence

Possibilities

In a place

Built

To herd

Those judged unfit

To live any longer

In a place

Conceived

To corral

The misfits

Until such a time

That they can be

Disposed of

By willing hands

Washed in

Lye

Christ on the cross

Between two thieves

Rumored by

Others to be

Revolutionaries

The Son of God

Slaughtered for

Blasphemy

There can be no salvation

In the singular pursuit

Never was… never will be

As God to me

And me to

You, my brother

Triads trace Trinity

Church can only ever

Truly be called

Community

The guard

Enters—time’s up

Two more minutes—please?

(Quickly now)

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem

 We consume Christ

A moment more

Together

Holding

Some silence

And then each got to go

Each to his own destiny
